Why See a Female Gynaecologist?
Gynaecological health is one of the most personal areas of medicine. Whether you are attending for a routine cervical screening, investigating a persistent symptom you have been putting off addressing, or navigating the transition into menopause, the relationship between patient and clinician matters enormously. Many women find that seeing a female gynaecologist removes an invisible barrier — one they may not have consciously identified until it is no longer there. When you feel at ease, you describe your symptoms more accurately, ask the questions you really want to ask, and leave the consultation with a clearer picture of your health.
Comfort and communication go hand in hand. Women who feel genuinely understood during an intimate examination are far more likely to attend for follow-up care, to raise concerns early rather than late, and to engage actively in the management of their own health. This is not a small thing. Early presentation consistently leads to better outcomes across almost every area of gynaecological medicine — from identifying cervical cell changes before they become clinically significant, to diagnosing conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids that are frequently under-investigated for years. Choosing a female gynaecologist is, for many patients, a straightforward and entirely reasonable way to lower the threshold to seeking care.
It is worth being clear: choosing a female gynaecologist is not about compromising on clinical expertise, nor is it a reluctance to trust male clinicians. It is simply about choosing the conditions under which you feel most able to be open, thorough, and honest in a medical consultation. Dr Mermigka brings more than two decades of international specialist experience, advanced training in gynaecological ultrasound, and particular expertise in menopause care, pelvic pain, and reproductive health — alongside a consultation style that is thorough, unhurried, and entirely without judgement. Patients frequently comment that they felt heard in a way they had not previously experienced in a medical setting.
There is also a practical dimension that matters to many patients. Accessing care through AristoGP means no GP referral is required, prompt appointment availability and continuity of care with the same consultant throughout. Dr Mermigka takes your history, performs the clinical examination, carries out your pelvic ultrasound scan, and interprets the results — all in a single visit. Whether this is a routine annual well woman check, a concern you have been carrying for months, or something you have never quite found the right moment to discuss, we aim to provide care that is both specialist and genuinely comfortable.
Meet Dr Anastasia Mermigka — Consultant Gynaecologist & Obstetrician

Dr Anastasia Mermigka
Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist
GMC No. 7640566
GMC Registered | Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist | Advanced Pelvic Ultrasound | Menopause Specialist | English, Greek, Italian
Dr Anastasia Mermigka is a fully GMC-registered Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with more than 25 years of international clinical experience. She trained extensively across leading centres , developing specialist expertise across the full breadth of gynaecological and obstetric medicine before focusing her practice on the areas where she can deliver the greatest clinical value. Her qualifications encompass advanced pelvic ultrasound, menopause medicine, and the management of complex gynaecological conditions — and she continues to develop her practice in line with current evidence and specialist guidelines.
Dr Mermigka’s principal clinical interests include menopause care, fertility guidance, sexual and reproductive health, the assessment of early pregnancy concerns, and the investigation of pelvic pain. She is particularly skilled in gynaecological ultrasound. At AristoGP, Dr Mermigka takes your clinical history, performs the physical examination, carries out the pelvic ultrasound herself, and provides a written interpretation of the findings — all within a single appointment. This integrated approach means no information is lost between clinicians, and you receive a complete clinical picture in one visit rather than across multiple appointments at different locations.
As a menopause specialist, Dr Mermigka offers thorough assessment of hormonal changes, detailed discussion of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) options and alternatives, and the development of personalised, evidence-based management plans that reflect each patient’s individual health profile, preferences, and concerns. She consults fluently in English, Greek, and Italian — a particular asset for patients who feel more comfortable discussing sensitive health matters in their first language. At AristoGP, Dr Mermigka works alongside Dr Schoinas (GP, MRCGP, GMC 7632510), ensuring that patients who need integrated primary and specialist care can access both a GP and a consultant gynaecologist under one roof — a genuinely unusual and clinically valuable combination in private practice.
Our Gynaecology Services
Every gynaecology service at AristoGP is delivered by Dr Mermigka at our Central London EC1 clinic. There are no locum clinicians, no rotating staff, and no situation in which you are seen by someone other than the specialist you booked. This continuity of care — seeing the same consultant across every visit — is something many patients find profoundly reassuring, particularly when managing ongoing or sensitive conditions. Below is an overview of the services available, each of which can be booked directly without a GP referral.
1. Consultant Gynaecology Assessment & Same-Day Ultrasound
A comprehensive private gynaecology consultation with Dr Mermigka includes a detailed clinical history, examination, and where appropriate, a same-day pelvic ultrasound performed by Dr Mermigka herself. The ultrasound allows assessment of the uterus, ovaries, and pelvic structures for conditions including fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis features, and abnormal bleeding. A written report is provided following every consultation. This is the most comprehensive first-step option for any new or ongoing gynaecological concern.

2. Cervical Screening & HPV Testing
Private cervical screening at AristoGP offers a comfortable alternative to the NHS pathway, with appointments available at short notice and results typically returned within a few days. Dr Mermigka performs liquid-based cytology (LBC) sampling, with co-testing for high-risk HPV strains where requested. Results are explained in full at a follow-up consultation if required, and referral for colposcopy can be arranged promptly where indicated. Cervical screening is recommended every three years for women aged 25 to 49 and every five years for women aged 50 to 64, though many women choose annual private screening for peace of mind.

3. Menopause Care
The perimenopause and menopause transition can affect women differently and profoundly — and the quality of medical support during this time matters. Dr Mermigka offers specialist menopause consultations that begin with a comprehensive assessment of your hormonal health, current symptoms, and personal health history. She discusses all management options in detail, including the different types, routes, and regimens of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), as well as non-hormonal alternatives where preferred or clinically appropriate. Every menopause management plan is tailored to you individually and reviewed at follow-up to ensure it continues to meet your needs as your health evolves.

4. Pelvic Pain Assessment
Pelvic pain is one of the most common — and most frequently under-investigated — symptoms in women’s health. Whether you experience pain cyclically around your period, persistently throughout the month, or in relation to specific activities or intercourse, a thorough assessment is essential to identify the underlying cause. Dr Mermigka conducts a full gynaecological evaluation, including clinical history, pelvic examination, and pelvic ultrasound, to investigate potential causes including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, adenomyosis, fibroids, and pelvic inflammatory disease. An accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective management, and you will receive a clear explanation of findings and a personalised treatment plan.

5. Early Pregnancy Support
Early pregnancy can be a time of significant anxiety, particularly for women who have experienced previous miscarriage, fertility difficulties, or who simply want the reassurance of professional guidance in the first weeks. Dr Mermigka offers early pregnancy assessments including transvaginal and abdominal ultrasound to confirm intrauterine pregnancy, assess fetal viability, and evaluate gestational age. These appointments are particularly valuable before NHS antenatal care begins, and they provide a thorough clinical review alongside the emotional reassurance of seeing an experienced specialist in a calm, unhurried setting.

6. Well Woman Health Check
The AristoGP Well Woman Check is our most comprehensive preventive health package for women, combining a consultant gynaecology consultation, pelvic ultrasound, and a screening panel tailored to your age, health history, and risk profile. It is designed for women who want a thorough annual health review in a single appointment rather than piecing together separate tests across multiple providers. The Complete Well Woman Check includes cervical screening, alongside hormonal and general health blood tests, and concludes with a detailed written summary of all findings and recommended next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a GP referral to see Dr Mermigka?
No referral is required. You can book directly with Dr Mermigka through our online booking system or by contacting the clinic by phone or WhatsApp. This is one of the core advantages of private gynaecology care — access is immediate, at a time that suits you, without needing to navigate a GP appointment first or wait for a referral letter to be processed.
What happens during a first consultation with Dr Mermigka?
Your first appointment begins with a comprehensive clinical history — Dr Mermigka will ask about your symptoms, menstrual cycle, relevant past medical history, medications, and any previous investigations. Where clinically appropriate, a physical or pelvic examination may be performed. For most gynaecology consultations, a same-day pelvic ultrasound is available and can be conducted in the same appointment (included in the Consultation + Ultrasound package). You will receive a detailed written report documenting all findings and recommended next steps before you leave.
Why should I choose a female gynaecologist?
Many women find that seeing a female gynaecologist enables them to speak more openly about symptoms they might otherwise downplay or avoid mentioning, and to feel more at ease during intimate examinations. This is not a reflection of clinical expertise — it is simply about choosing the conditions under which you communicate most effectively. When a patient feels genuinely comfortable, the quality of the clinical history improves, the examination is more straightforward, and the overall consultation is more productive. For many women, the shared experience of living in a female body adds a layer of understanding that informs the consultation in subtle but meaningful ways.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
In most cases, appointments are available within one to two working days. We aim to accommodate short-notice bookings wherever possible, recognising that gynaecological concerns often warrant prompt review rather than weeks of waiting. Same-week and next-day appointments are frequently available — please contact us directly if your situation is urgent and we will do our best to find you the earliest slot.
Is a pelvic ultrasound included in the consultation?
A same-day pelvic ultrasound is included in the Consultation + Pelvic Ultrasound package (currently £250 during our Easter Offer, reduced from £270). This is performed by Dr Mermigka herself during your appointment — not by a separate sonographer. If you book the F2F Consultation only (£180), ultrasound can be added as a separate item if it is clinically indicated during the appointment. We recommend the combined package for most new gynaecology presentations, as the ultrasound significantly extends the scope of clinical assessment.
What does cervical screening involve?
Cervical screening (sometimes called a smear test or Pap test) is a brief, straightforward procedure that takes around five minutes. Dr Mermigka uses a speculum to gently collect a sample of cells from the cervix using a small brush. The sample is sent to a laboratory for liquid-based cytology analysis and, where requested, tested for high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV). Results are typically returned within a few days. The procedure is not usually painful, though some women find it briefly uncomfortable. Dr Mermigka takes care to ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout.
How much does a private gynaecologist cost in London?
At AristoGP, private gynaecology services are priced from £150 for cervical screening sample collection only, through to £340 for the Complete Well Woman Check, which includes a consultant consultation, pelvic ultrasound, cervical screening, and a blood screening panel. The Consultation + Pelvic Ultrasound package — our most popular option for a first gynaecology appointment — is currently £250 (Easter Offer, reduced from £270). All prices are fixed and inclusive, with no hidden additional charges. A full price list is available on our services page.
Can I claim the cost on my private health insurance?
This depends on the terms and conditions of your individual policy. Many private health insurers will cover consultant gynaecology appointments and investigations, though some policies require a GP referral or pre-authorisation before you attend. We recommend contacting your insurer directly before booking to confirm your level of cover and any requirements they have. AristoGP is happy to provide any documentation your insurer requires.
Not sure what to book? Start with a F2F Gynaecology Consultation (£180) — your consultant can add any further investigations during the appointment. Any difference in cost will be discussed with you at the time. WhatsApp us if you would like guidance before booking.
